ADX vs MACD

ADX and MACD answer different questions. ADX tells you whether there is a strong trend at all, on a 0 to 100 scale, without saying which way. MACD tells you whether momentum is turning up or down. Use ADX to decide whether trend signals are worth trusting, and MACD to time them.

What each one measures

ADX (Average Directional Index) measures trend strength. Below 20 means no real trend; above 25 means a strong one. Two helper lines show direction: +DI is buying pressure, −DI is selling pressure. A rising ADX with +DI on top is a strong uptrend.

MACD measures momentum using the gap between a fast and slow EMA. A crossover of the MACD line above its signal line suggests upward momentum is building.

Why they work well together

MACD’s biggest weakness is sideways markets, where it crosses up and down and most signals fail. ADX is built to spot exactly that. If ADX is below 20, you can treat MACD crossovers with suspicion. If ADX is above 25 and rising, MACD crossovers in the trend’s direction carry more weight.

A worked example

Say a stock drifts between ₹780 and ₹820 for six weeks. MACD crosses up and down four times, and ADX sits near 15. Those crossovers were noise. Then price breaks above ₹820, ADX climbs past 25 with +DI above −DI, and MACD crosses above zero. Now both tools agree that a trend has begun.

Later, ADX starts falling from 40 while price still rises. That is the early warning that the trend is getting tired, often before MACD turns down.

The short answer

When to use which

Use ADX as a filter to decide whether the market is trending. Use MACD to time moves within a trend that ADX has confirmed. Relying on MACD alone in a low-ADX market is one of the easiest ways to collect false signals.

Common questions

Does ADX show trend direction?

No. ADX shows only strength. Look at +DI and −DI, or at price and moving averages, for direction.

Which is better, ADX or MACD?

They do different jobs. ADX tells you if a trend exists, MACD tells you which way momentum is moving.

What ADX level confirms a MACD signal?

A common rule is ADX above 25 for a strong trend. Below 20, MACD crossovers are more likely to fail.
