MACD: Is momentum turning?
How to read the MACD line, signal line and histogram, what a bullish crossover means, and how to practise calling momentum shifts on real NSE charts.
MACD shows momentum changing
MACD subtracts a slow average from a fast one. When the gap grows, momentum is building. It has three parts in the bottom panel.
What to look for
- MACD line (blue): the fast minus the slow average.
- Signal line (orange): a smoothed MACD.
- Histogram bars: the gap between them. Green bars mean momentum is turning up.
A crossover below the zero line is an early signal. It works best when price also starts to turn.
Look at the end of the MACD panel. The histogram bars flipped from red to green. What changed?
- Price reached a new high
- Volume doubled
- Downward momentum faded and turned up
Show the answer
Downward momentum faded and turned up. Green bars mean the MACD line moved above its signal line. Selling pressure has faded and momentum is turning up, even though price is still near its lows.
Momentum turns before price
The stock fell from about ₹418 and went flat. The decline was slowing, and MACD crossed up while price was still near the lows. Momentum often turns a little before price does.
MACD lags. Use it to confirm what price is doing, not as a stand-alone buy button.
