Swing trading vs Intraday trading
Intraday trading means buying and selling within the same day, so you never hold overnight. Swing trading means holding for a few days to a few weeks to catch one move in a trend. Intraday needs constant screen time and fast decisions; swing trading needs patience and the nerve to hold through overnight gaps.
| Point | Swing trading | Intraday trading |
|---|---|---|
| Holding period | Days to weeks | Minutes to hours, closed the same day |
| Chart time frame | Daily, sometimes hourly | 1-min to 15-min |
| Screen time | A short check each day | Most of market hours |
| Overnight risk | Yes, gaps on news | None |
| Common tools | 20/50 EMA, RSI, MACD, Supertrend | VWAP, short EMAs, volume |
| Trades per month | Fewer | Many |
| Costs | Lower, fewer trades | Higher, brokerage and charges add up |
How intraday trading works
You open and close the position on the same day. Moves are small, so traders often use leverage, which magnifies both gains and losses. VWAP is a central tool: above it, today’s buyers are in profit; below it, they are losing.
The pace is fast. Small losses add up quickly, and brokerage and charges on many trades eat into results.
How swing trading works
You look for a trend on the daily chart, wait for a pullback, and hold for the next leg. A common setup is price above a rising 20 EMA and 50 EMA, pulling back to the 20 EMA. A Supertrend line or a level under a recent low can serve as the stop-loss.
You must accept overnight risk. Results or news can open the stock well below your stop.
A worked example of risk
Say you have ₹1 lakh and decide to risk 1%, or ₹1,000, per trade. A swing trade at ₹500 with a stop at ₹480 risks ₹20 a share, so you buy 50 shares. An intraday trade at ₹500 with a stop at ₹496 risks ₹4 a share, so the same ₹1,000 risk allows 250 shares. The rupee risk is the same; intraday just needs a much bigger position, which is why charges and discipline matter even more there.
When to use which
If you have a job or limited screen time, swing trading is usually more practical. Intraday suits people who can watch the market full time and handle fast, frequent decisions. Whichever you choose, fix your risk per trade before you enter.
Common questions
Is swing trading better than intraday for beginners?
Swing trading is usually easier to start with because decisions are slower and need less screen time. It still carries real risk, so start small.
Which indicators are used for intraday trading?
VWAP is the most common, along with short EMAs, volume and sometimes RSI on 5-minute charts.
Can I do swing trading with a full-time job?
Many people do, because you can check daily charts after market hours and place orders with a stop-loss.
