VWAP vs Moving average
VWAP (volume weighted average price) is the average price everyone paid today, weighted by how many shares traded at each price. It resets every morning at 9:15, so it is an intraday tool. A moving average spans many days or candles and ignores volume. VWAP suits day traders; moving averages suit swing traders and investors.
| Point | VWAP | Moving average |
|---|---|---|
| Time span | One trading day, resets at 9:15 | Any number of candles, rolling |
| Uses volume | Yes, heavy-volume prices count more | No (standard versions) |
| Typical chart | 1-min to 15-min intraday | Daily, weekly, also intraday |
| What it tells you | Are today’s buyers in profit on average? | Which way is the trend over the period? |
| Who watches it | Day traders and large funds benchmarking fills | Swing traders and investors |
| Weakness | Means little on daily charts or late in a day | Lags, ignores how much traded |
What VWAP tells you
If price is above VWAP, most of today’s buyers are in profit and less likely to panic-sell. Below VWAP, most are losing. Big funds often judge their buying against VWAP, so price tends to react around it.
A common setup is the VWAP reclaim: price falls below VWAP after the open, climbs back above it and holds.
What a moving average tells you
A moving average shows the trend over its period. On a daily chart, the 20 EMA and 50 EMA tell you whether the stock has been trending up or down over weeks. It does not care how many shares changed hands at each price.
A worked example
Say a stock opens at ₹1,000, drops to ₹985 by 10:00, and VWAP sits at ₹992. By noon price climbs back to ₹998 and holds above VWAP. For a day trader, buyers have taken control for the day.
On the daily chart, though, the stock is below a falling 50 EMA. The bigger trend is still down. A day trader might act on the VWAP reclaim, while a swing trader would likely wait for the daily trend to improve.
When to use which
Use VWAP if you trade within a single day. Use moving averages for trades held over days or weeks, and for long-term trend. Checking the daily moving averages before an intraday VWAP trade tells you whether you are trading with or against the bigger picture.
Common questions
Can VWAP be used for swing trading?
Standard VWAP resets every day, so it is mainly an intraday tool. Swing traders usually rely on daily moving averages instead.
Which is better for intraday, VWAP or EMA?
VWAP is often preferred because it includes volume and resets daily. Many day traders watch a short EMA alongside it for timing.
Why does price react to VWAP?
Many funds benchmark their trades against VWAP, and many intraday traders watch it, so orders tend to cluster around it.
